Pixel Art : Make a rocky background

In this tutorial you will learn how to draw a rocky background with pixel art.

We are going to work with GIMP in this tutorial, because it has a tool that make the sprite connectable, it's useful on making a background sprite, so let's start.

• First, create a new image with 64*64 pixels :

• Start drawing some rocks :

• Now, choose your palette colors, 3 colors for the rocks :

•  Fill the rocks with their colors :

•  Add light effect :

• Make the edges looks smooth by deleting the points between edges :

• Now add shadow effect :

•  Then, fill the back with the same color used in shadow :

•  Choose a new color, it should be more shaded :

• Surround the rocks with your new color :

• Now, pick your first rock's color and add some lines between :

• Add light effect :

• Then a shadow effect

• Now you have finished coloring, it's GIMP tool's turn

• Got to : Filters > Mapping > Make Connectable :

• It give you something like that :

• And finally here is our background, ready to bee used in a game :
